Stephen Hammond MP on Wednesday helped to launch Wimbledon’s Going for Gold campaign, which aims to ensure that local businesses and the arts harness the opportunities arising from Wimbledon’s status as a host venue for the 2012 Olympics. The campaign’s name recognises the aspiration to be a winner and a global brand.

The Going for Gold campaign was launched to local businesses by the Merton Chamber of Commerce, backed by the London Borough of Merton. It was launched at Tapanco restaurant to an audience of local businesses, interest groups and representatives of the arts.

Speaking to a packed audience, Stephen Hammond said: “I am delighted to be launching and supporting Wimbledon’s Going for Gold campaign. We are unique – not only are we a host town but we are also the ideal location for people or businesses coming for the Olympic summer to base themselves.”

“There will be huge opportunities for local businesses and tourism.” Stephen Hammond continued. “We need to ensure that we are thoroughly prepared.”

“I look forward to everyone getting behind this campaign and making Wimbledon a ‘gold’ winner in 2012.”
