ENVIRONMENT AND REGENERATION DEPARTMENT - LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON

Street Management Enforcement Team

FLY POSTING

The council is concerned about the level of fly posting in the borough. Some fly posting is taking place on traffic signs and other street furniture, which interferes with sight lines and could create a danger to traffic and pedestrians. Some large banners are placed on pavement railings at intersections, which can prevent children from seeing and being seen by passing traffic.
There is also the case that most of the fly posting is an eye sore and detrimental to the amenity of the area.

If businesses want advice on advertising they should contact the town centre managers who may be able to assist.

It is an offence to deface property, without permission, with posters, placards and other markings.

We seek cooperation from residents and businesses and request that you do not put out unauthorised signs and posters.

We have already issued some fixed penalty notices of £75 to some individuals who have placed posters and the like on traffic signs.

The council has a duty to keep the street and public places clear of fly posting and seek every ones cooperation.

On the 6th July 2006, and on future dates yet to be arranged, council enforcement officers and fellow departments will mount an operation in the borough to remove offending signs and issue fixed penalty notices to offenders.
